The Escapee

The escapee. These tomatoes-on-the-vine looked like a chain gang
to me. This is the finished painting. Following is a step-by-step
demo of how I created this piece.

I start by setting up the still life in my studio. It sometimes
takes as long to get the composition right as it does to
complete the painting.
 

The lightest pieces of the tomatoes go in first.

 To simplify my paintings, I look for three values in the main
subject.

 Here I have added the blue cloth. This complementary color
sets off the color of the tomatoes.

 

 To finish this painting, I added the table color, tomato stems
and highlights. The edges are modified to push the farthest
tomatoes back.

Chain Gang

I brought home some tomatoes-on-the-vine and decided they would make a great painting. Once I was finished, they reminded me of the old chain gang without stripes.
